WDRL ready for 2015

A new and exciting organization has sprung up from some brain storming and conversation with a number of Pro Mod teams.  The Western Drag Racing League is the brain child of Rome Awde, series promoter and announcer at Castrol Raceway, a couple of current Pro Mod racers and the JB’s Heads Up Challenge Series operators. The idea was to “reorganize” the Western Pro Modified teams once again after the demise of the West Coast Pro Mod Association.  Pro Modified racing has seen a boost in car counts over the last few years and with two new big races, DoorWarz in Mission B.C. and the return to the MOPAR Rocky Mountain Nationals, IHRA Nitro Jam at Castrol Raceway, there has been a surge of interest in the class.

The WDRL concept is a new idea.  The organization is more of a virtual racing league, then a Sanctioning body.  WDRL works closely with the Tracks and Teams to create a positive, fun environment, rules package, points championship, prize purse, racer insurance and contingency package.  What’s different then other Pro Mod organizations is, WDRL does not run the race track or race, that is left up to the track operators.  The organization works directly with the tracks to put on a great show for the fans.

The WDRL is also working with the Calgary and Vancouver chapters of Kids Up Front.  A great organization that helps kids that, for whatever reason, can’t make it to their favorite drag racing events.  Their families may not be able to afford tickets to major drag race events, so the WDRL will support with a “Racing For Kids Up Front” program.  Working along with the tracks, tickets for events, “Crew Chief for the Day” and VIP access programs will be in place for each WDRL event.  The WDRL also hopes to raise funds at each event to support this organization.

WDRL has launched a new comprehensive website, wdrl.ca, which includes race stories, videos, race photos, team information and up to date points championship listings.  You will also be able to follow along at each race on their Facebook page.  The organization hopes to have event live streaming in place for the 2016 season.

Membership is open to any and all Pro Modified teams, along with a few other exciting classes, including a Top Sportsman championship.  Also included in the organization is the three year old JB’s Ultimate Heads Up Challenge Series program.  The Heads Up Challenge is a new and growing door car class with few rules.

The series has three classes including, Extreme Street 10.5, which is a small 10.5″ wide tire or drag radial class with 1/8 mile racing. Outlaw 8.5, an exciting very small 8.5″ drag slick or small drag radial class for 1/8 mile racing and the Howard Cams Open Comp, which is 1/4 mile handicap racing for door cars between 13.50 and 8.50 ET.  Open Comp locks in the drivers dial in based on qualifying rounds.  The dial in must remain the same throughout eliminations.

With a tentative 5 race Pro Mod schedule and at least a 7 race JB’s UHC series schedule, this should be a busy and exciting year for this new organization.  For further information or to become a member, contact Rome Awde at 403-615-3550 or [email protected], you can also find a membership application at wdrl.ca.
