Mater comes off as a simple-minded stereotypical Southern hick, but he is a Genius Ditz, knowing a lot about engines, and can drive backwards using his rear view mirrors. He has a strong crush and affection for Holley Shiftwell and he’s best friends with Lightning. He becomes Lightning’s best friend and initial crew chief in Cars 2, where he is mistaken for a spy by Finn McMissile. Aspiring champion race car Lightning McQueen is on the fast track to success, fame, and everything he’s ever hoped for—until he takes an unexpected detour on dusty Route 66. His have-it-all-now attitude is thrown into a tailspin when a small-town community that time forgot shows McQueen what he’s been missing in his high-octane life. Van Der Bird is a dark orange Pitts Special S1-S with some red and white decals on his wings and body who represents the Netherlands in the WATG.
Toys “R” Us and Disney announced today it is launching its first series of wooden vehicles from the film, much of which uses the fictional Route 66 town of Radiator Springs as its setting. The quartet didn’t confirm these characters are completely absent from the movie; I wouldn’t be shocked if they made a brief cameo somewhere. But they’re definitely not playing a significant role inCars 3 — and neither, for that matter, did Mater in the half of the film I saw. He popped up occasionally, but his role as McQueen’s sidekick is largely filled by Cruz. When he was younger he worked at a garage for elderly cars, where he befriended an early drop-tank racer who turned him onto the ways of racing with Nitrous. Learning from the master who racked-up records on the Great Salt Lake, Boost promised the old timer he’d keep the traditions alive.
Mack is seen in the short Mater and the Ghostlight after Lightning established his headquarters on US Route 66. In Cars 2 he appears in a pair of brief cameo appearances at the start and end, where his two lines are “Oh, his best friend greetings. They get longer every year,” and “Oh, those two are perfect for each other.”. He appears in Cars 3 with a much larger role compared to Cars 2.
Near the end of the film, he operates a boot camp to train SUVs and 4×4s (some of whom had never been off-road) in rugged and dirt terrain. Hummer, Murphy, Frank “Pinky” Pinkerton, and Charlie Cargo. During the Cars Video Game, Sarge trains McQueen in his boot camp as well by having some formal off-road racing training who McQueen passed in flying colors. He was inspired by the Air Tractor AT-502, Cessna and the PZL-Mielec M-18 Dromader. He is painted white and orange with some black stripes.
She was intended to be the double agent that met up with Mater. Giulia was left out of the completed movie, and replaced by Holley Shiftwell. She is modelled as an Alfa Romeo, resembling an Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider. Sweet Tea is a forklift and Louise Nash’s former pitty. Sweet Tea knows all about fighting hard to prove that women deserve their fair shake in the racing world.
